What Makes a Square Door
The frame members meet at right angles rather than being mitred, so the rails run into the stiles and the moulding stops at each corner. It is the simpler joint and the cleaner look, and it is the frame behind every shaker door you have seen.
Frame and Panels
A 2 1/4 inch frame, in flat panel or in solid and raised panel.
Flat panel is the shaker look: a plain recessed centre inside a square frame, which suits a contemporary kitchen and a traditional one equally. Solid and raised panel shapes the centre so it stands proud, which pushes the door towards traditional. Both are shown above with their reference numbers.
Materials
Square-frame doors can be made in hardwood, MDF or thermofoil. Hardwood if you want to see grain, MDF if you want a flawless painted finish, thermofoil if the kitchen is busy and the budget is set.
Square or Mitre?
Square for clean lines and a shaker or contemporary kitchen. Mitre if you want the moulding to run unbroken around the panel and a more formal room. Same shop, same warranty. It is a look, not a quality difference.

Common Questions
Is a shaker door the same as a square door?
A shaker door is a square-framed door with a flat recessed panel. So every shaker is square-framed, but a square-framed door with a raised panel is not a shaker.
